A few thoughts on the winning streak...
As we monitor Wizard’s chatter across social media, one popular topic is the current six-game winning streak. Fans are speculating with various theories:
The recent Rui trade (although the streak started prior to that)
Beal’s return to the lineup
Deni’s improved play
Delon’s defensive presence
Although we think some of these are definitely contributing reasons, one factor that hasn't really been discussed is a topic we talked about in one of our prior weekly editions: EASE OF SCHEDULE.
Lets put some of these wins into perspective:
Win 1: Knicks in New York
Solid win against a full/healthy Knicks roster. No comments. Well done! Great revenge game.
Win 2: Orlando in DC
Orlando is the 3rd worst team in the league. Yes, they have some young guys who can run but there was no reason we should not have won this game (Even with KP out).
Win 3: Mavs in Dallas
Again, a solid win against a fully stacked Mavericks team. Well done!
Win 4: Rockets in Houston
Rockets are literally in the running for the worst team in the league. Plus, the game ended with the Wizards winning by only 5 points after Kuzma had to go off for 20 in the 4th. This game should never have been close.
Win 5: Pelican in New Orleans
Good win but let's remember 2 things:
Zion was out
Valanciunas got ejected
Win 6: Spurs in San Antonio
Spurs are the second worst team in the West. Besides the 1st quarter Wizards dominated for the rest of the game. Good win but should be expected.
So, to summarize: two of the wins were against tankathon teams - the Magic and Rockets. The Valanciunas ejection in 2nd quarter of the Pelicans game was really helpful, (boy he ate our lunch last time if you remember), and no Zion. The wins vs. the Knicks and Mavs were quality ones. Spurs never should have stood a chance.
Bottom line-we should be happy with the win streak but the Wizards upcoming schedule is a lot more difficult in first half of February which includes games against:
Brooklyn Nets
Cleveland Caveliers
Golden State Warriors
If we win those 3 games, then let's start popping the champagne.
