Weekly Recap
Final scores
Wizards 127 *106 Spurs (Monday):
This game might may become known as Deni's coming out party. He scored a career high 25 points with 9 rebounds and somehow developed the nickname "Turbo" which nobody had ever heard before.
After giving up 36 points in the first quarter to the Spurs (the 2nd worst team in the West) the Wizards decided to wake up. Fortunately KP came prepared and started strong with 13 pts in the 1st.
Everybody added a little something in the 2nd quarter with bench bringing in 21 points combined in the 1st half. The Wizards ended the half up 66-55.
The second half was Deni's moment to shine, scoring 6/6 shooting and getting 6 rebounds (3 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block.
Wizards closed out effectively and it was good to see positive energy from team around Deni's performance. Nice moment here after the game where Deni recognized his teammates support:
Wizards * Pistons (Wednesday-POSTPONED)
Wizards 16 * Blazers 124 (Friday)
Wizards came out strong leading by as many as 20 points in the first quarter and 18 points at halftime. KP and Beal torched the Blazers with KP having 19 first-half points and Beal with 18.
The third quarter was a very different story with Anfernee Simmons returning the favor. He shot six for seven from deep and had 20 points in the quarter. The Wizard’s lead was cut to 4 by quarter’s end thanks to the Blazer’s 39 points .
The fourth quarter was back and forth but you could feel the game slipping away. The offense stagnated most of the second half and it felt like it took too long for Beal and KP to re-enter the game in the 4th quarter. We didn’t see Gafford at all down the stretch and the offense looked confused at times on what to run when baskets were needed the most, resulting in costly turnovers.
Wizards 123* Nets 125 (Saturday)
Pretty similar to the last game unfortunately. Great start though! The Wizards were up 23 at one point with KP scoring 20 points, followed by Deni & Monte with 22 combined in the first half. Kuzma left the game with a left ankle sprain in the second quarter.
Towards the the end of the 2nd quarter the fouls were adding up for the Wizards and even though they ended up 18 at the half it felt like the game had started to slip.
Sure enough, by 6:27 in the 3rd the lead had been cut to 7 following 2 big threes by Patty Mills. The offense and defense just got sloppier from that point on as Cam Thomas proceeded to make any shot he threw up (he ended with a career high 44).
KP kept us in the game until he fouled out with 2:51 left in 4th. Monte stepped up with with 2 big shots but missed the last 2 free throws that could have tied the game with 7.3 seconds left.
Tough loss but given we did not have Beal and Kuzma we can't be too disappointed.
Unseld's popularity tanking with online Wizards fans...
As we monitor what Wizard’s fans are talking about across the various social media platforms and pages, a new topic is rapidly developing. It’s no longer the trade deadline or Rui trade, no longer if we’re better or worse with Beal, or if we should go all in or not on Kuzma...
The latest trending topic is Wes Unseld Junior. After losing two straight games with leads of over 20, fans are calling for his dismissal. According to ESPN, the Wizard’s are the first team over the last 25 seasons to lose when leading by 20+ points on consecutive days.
When I agreed to purchase season tickets this year, I was excited to see what this team would look like with Beal, KP, and Kuzma together. But one thing that was in the back of my head is I’m not sold on coach Unseld after seeing some things last year.
I’m afraid to say this year I’ve seen worse. From questionable lineups, to blowing leads, to play calls down the stretch, I’d have to agree with what our fans are saying. This team deserves someone who can get the best of their roster.
3 Wizard stats that will make you smile
73.7% True Shooting Percentage
We all know Daniel Gafford is efficient but did you know he leads the league in True Shooting Percentage at 73.7%. True shooting percentage is essentially a formula that calculates the average of all shots taken including free throws and threes.
To add to "The Landlord's" resume he leads the league in restricted area FG% at 83.1%.
85.7% Line-up Field Goal Percentage
We all have our opinions on who our favorite line up is for the Wizards. However... did you know that the 5-man line-up with the highest FG% in the NBA at 85.7% is from our beloved Wizards. That line-up is:
KP
Kuzma
Monte Morris
Goodwin
Kispert
72.2% Restricted Area Field Goal Percentage
Finally, when you add up all Gafford's dunks, Kispert's successful cuts to the rim, Kuzma's drives and both KP & Beal's stop and pops from just below the FT line, the Wizard's rank first in the league in restricted area FG% at 72.2%.
It is nice to be the best a few things.
Here a few more stats to shout out:
Kristaps Porzingas ranks 15th in the NBA in FTA (free throw attempts) and is shooting 83.4%.
Wizards rank 6th in the league in blocks averaging 5.1 BLKs per game.
Delon Wright is averaging 2.0 steals per game which would place him 3rd in the NBA after Jimmy Butler and OG Anunoby but because he has not played 70% of games due to injury he does not qualify yet.
Upcoming Schedule for next week:
Monday: Wizards vs Cavaliers, Feb. 6th @7:00pm (Last time we played the Cavs this season they beat us in overtime. Cavs are the 5th team in East with a full healthy roster. KP and Gafford are gonna have their hands full in the paint against Mobley and Jarred Allen )
Wednesday: Wizards vs Hornets, Feb. 8th @7pm (This season the Wizards have won all of their 3 games against the Hornets who are the second worst team in the East. Should be a win)
Saturday: Wizards vs Pacers, Feb. 11th @ 7pm (Wizards have beat the Pacers 2 out of the 3 games they've played this season. Pacers are right behind the Wizards in the standings fighting for a play in spot. This will be a good game!)
Play of the week...
Finally, we want to give a shout out to Kendrick Nunn! All of us had a lot of skepticism about him coming in after we were heartbroken with Rui's departure. Nunn has stepped up, averaging an efficient 9 points a game with 42% FGP. Here is a slam on the Nets that definitely made it on Sport Center.
